Sephardic Jews who were expelled by the Alhambra Decree in 1492 found sanctuary in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The newcomers settled the Sijavus-pashas Quarter (El Cortijo – Grand Yard) and soon became assimilated. After Bosnia and Herzegovina has been annexed to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the new group – Ashkenazi Jews came to Bosnia and Herzegovina from Austria.
