Matelica is situated in valley between Mount San Vicino and the Marche Apennines chain of mountains; its pride is Verdicchio di Matelica, a white wine produced in the area and one of the Marche’s top quality white wines. Most of the life of Matelica revolves around the central Piazza Mattei, where stands its elegant 16th century fountain.
Around it there are some of the town’s chief attractions : the Palazzo del Governo , the Palazzo Ottoni and the town hall. The local theatre was designed by Giuseppe Piermarini, the architect who built the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
Palazzo Piersanti houses a museum, with a collection of precious works of art and antique furniture while the Civic Archaeological Museum boasts important finds dating back to the Piceni civilization. The town is ideally placed for a vast array of activities , including hiking, jogging and exploring the surrounding landscape.
