Founded in the eleventh century it has been erected in fief by Emperor Frederick II in the thirteenth century. Subsequently autonomous, then in commendation, and finally part of Santa Giustina it was suppressed in 1810 by Napoleon. Restored and again removed during the nineteenth century, it finally returned to the Benedictines of Subiaco in 1904.

The abbey, vast architectural complex, consists in the large church rebuilt at the end of 1500 on a design by Tullio Lombardo; from the monastery, one of the most vital in Italy, home of cultural associations, a rich and ancient library and a famous center for the restoration of the book; from a guesthouse that offers hospitality to groups and individuals who wish to get closer to the spiritual life of the order.
