As we descend from the coast of Epirus to those of Central Greece, we suddenly face a geological paradox. The compact shoreline is degraded by a narrow strip of sea, creating the most fascinating “inland sea” of the country.
It is the result of intense tectonic activity, which started last 2 million years. It is a tectonic draft opium began to fill with deposits of two rivers Arachthos and Louros. The gradual lifting of the sea over the past 10,000 years has led to the penetration of the Ionian Sea between Aktio and Preveza, which flooded the bay giving it its present form.
