Tolentino, whose historical center is still surrounded by long stretches of the thirteenth-century walls, preserves works of art and monuments of great value. Numerous tombs, from the 8th to the 4th centuries BC, attest to the presence of the Piceni culture at the site of today’s city, Roman Tolentinum, linked to Rome by the via Flaminia. The town is famous for its Basilica of San Nicola da Tolentino who lived and died here, gaining the reputation of a miracle worker.

In the Sanctuary (XIII-XV centuries) the “Chapel of S. Nicola” is decorated with frescos from the Rimini school (XIV century). From the chapel of Ss. Braccia you can visit the Treasure of San Nicola, which is inside the convent of the Augustinian monks. The Cathedral of S. Catervo was founded in the VIII-IX centuries and rebuilt in 1830, according to a design by Filippo Spada. The former church of the Carità has a Gothic facade and a Romanic portal.

Not far away from the center there is the Rancia Castle, seat of the Archaeological Museum. In the territory of the municipalities of Tolentino stands the Abbey of Fiastra, one of the most famous and best preserved Cistercian architecture in Italy.
