Holy Monastery of Seltso

Located at the eastern end of the prefecture, at some distance from the village of Piges, perched on a steep offshoot of the mountains of Tzoumerka, whose roots are quietly licked by the waters of Acheloos River.

Only the church and the ruined cells around it are preserved intact from the buildings of the old monastery.

The church was founded in 1697 and is dedicated to the Assumption of the Theotokos.

On the inside, the walls of the church are full of icons of exquisite art, which are fortunately preserved in perfect condition.

The historical significance of the Monastery is also great, as in 1804 over 1,000 Souliotes led by Kitsos Botsaris found shelter there to escape from Ali Pasha.

After a three-month siege, the monastery was captured with treason.

Only sixty five were saved during the heroic exodus that was attempted. However, around two hundred non-combatants, mostly women and children, chose to jump off from a 300-meter cliff, making Seltso a national sacrificial ground similar to or even higher than the one of Zaloggo.
