Fish of Amvrakikos


The Ambracian gulf is the living and breeding place for at least 33 fish species, and at least 15 more are fished there.

The lagoons of the gulf feed and grow many young fish in their eutrophic waters, where they find suitable habitat for their growth conditions. The productivity of the bay is very large and a large percentage of local people are employed in fishing.

Eels, sea bass, mullet, bream are some of the fish caught into the gulf. Apart from the famous sardine, Amvrakikos is known for shrimp, especially for its impressive prawns. The local fisherman use traditional fishing techniques, different for each type of fish, thus offering a unique in spectacle of craftsmanship.
Another ichthyological peculiarity of the Ambracian gulf, are some endemic freshwater species of fish.
