It is one of the most significant caves in the world, and it is situated in 4 km from the center of Ioannina. The cave is part of an underground river, 1.500.000 years old. In the cave were found bones of a cave bears that lived here 600.000 years before. The temperature is 18oC and the water of the lakes of 14oC.

It has a total extension of 14800 square kilometres. The length of the pathway is 1100m with 19 kinds of stalagmites and stalactites and many colours and shapes: The “catacombs”, the “palace of Persephone”, the Medusa”, the” lake with the pond lilies”, the “Wisteria Hall”.

Its existence was known from the beginnings of 19th century. In 1940 was used as a shelter of the residents during the bombarding from the Italians. It was explored in 1945 by Anna and Ioannis Petrochilos.
