The neighborhood called “Ghetto” is bounded approximately by Barbarigo, Manin, S. Canziano, Roma, Marsala streets and some time ago you could enter through a doorway in the direction of the cardinal points. Since 1603 paduan jews were forced to live in the ghetto with the obligation to abide by a nightly curfew; next to their houses, they opened shops and artisan activities of various kinds.
The italian rite synagogue, still used, exist from the mid-16th century. The area is easily recognizable for buildings that grow upward and the narrow streets. Walking through the Ghetto‘s streets, it’s a must to stop for a tasting in one of the typical restaurants in the neighborhood.
